My photography life and I

Hey, I am SUSAN. In fact, I have another name, Yeeezh, which is my photographic nickname. I want to tell you about the story of me and photography, because it occupies most of my life and has a deep influence on me.

I grew up in a family full of artistic atmosphere. My grandfather likes photography very much. He bought a seagull film camera for 87 yuan in the age when the rich people did not fill their stomachs. At that time, the family’s monthly salary was only 30 yuan. That camera recorded lots of happy family time. Although they are black and white photo, it was very precious. Later in a summer vacation of elementary school, I went to Wuhan Botanical Garden with my parents. I took two lotus photos taken with my family’s card camera and won the first prize in the school’s photography competition. My mother joked that I was very talented in photography. While as the high school life was very nervous, I rarely had the opportunity to pick up the camera to record life, so I did not deliberately cultivate this hobby.

my first photo

It was until the university that I really started to get in touch with professional photography, it also opened a door in my life. Before the sophomore class, I have never studied photography systematically. Every time I turned on the camera’s fully automatic button to press the shutter until teacher explained it carefully. I started to consciously learn what is the aperture, what is the shutter. Photography sucked me in with a powerful magic. When I found out that under my manual adjustment, the camera finder frame can appear different, once I arbitrarily adjust one of the parameters, the photos will be different, I think it is incredible, marveling at this fascinating film technology.

that starry night in the mountain

So I began to bring photography into my life, which greatly changed my lifestyle. I like traveling with my lovely camera. I used to go to a place to travel just remembered the beautiful moments with my eyes, but with the camera, every trip I took can be recorded. I appreciate the beautiful scenery of nature, climbing mountains to watch the sunrise, admiring the sunset by the sea which I feel very romantic! Last month, I went to a mountain in Zhuhai with my friends. We put a tent under the windmill to see the Milky Way and shoot the stars. The light pollution in the city is too serious, so it’s difficult to see the stars. Only in the inaccessible villages and the top of the mountain can we have a chance to admire the beautiful night sky. We drove to the top with a large pack of photographic equipment, chose the best location to watch the stars, supported the tents, prepared the equipment, and waited for the galaxy to rise from the skyline. At that time, the night sky was already starry. I have never seen so many stars. But suddenly, a large cloud floated from a distance. My heart began tight, because the galaxy will only appear when the weather is good. The sky has gradually been shrouded in fog. We had konwn that we will not see the galaxy, but I still have a glimmer of hope. After waiting for two hours, when everyone was ready to go back to the tent to sleep, suddenly a meteor crossed the sky. Everyone exclaimed! People made a wish against the pop. Although the galaxy was not appeared this time, it is enough to see the stars and the meteors that have been quietly crossed.

Guangzhou city

I also like to record humanities and capture the moments on the street. Street photography doesn’t require heavy lenses and tripods, just a mobile phone or a card camera is enough. Every time I go out, I will always carry a pocket-sized camera in my bag. As soon as I find an interesting moment, I can quickly pull out the shutter. This makes me pay more attention to the beauty of life. Walking on the streets in old Guangzhou city, shuttle between the cart and the water truck, smell the dry goods came from the alley. The lazy people are in a variety of ways, some of them chatted together, and some slept on the loungers on the street leisurely.

market

I like to visit the market as well, which is full of market atmosphere. The grandmother bargained along the meat case. The fish hawker stunned the fish with a stick. The old man who sold the tofu pulled a plastic bag and carefully put the tofu into it. These are all in my shot and I think this is life.

Last week I went to Guangzhou and Hong Kong and filmed two sets of black and white themes photo. One is behind the red carpet for the awards ceremony, and the other is the crowd on the Guangzhou subway. I want to share it with you, because I think black and white photos can mostly express moods, and they are the silent languages. This is a group of awards ceremony, the movie stars walked over the red carpet, and the photographers captured their beauty records. In fact, the protagonist is a photographer. I want to tell you that behind a beautiful photo, it is actually a group of people with long guns and short guns who are shooting in the competition. Another group of subway photos, profoundly recorded the daily life of people who are now tied up by the mobile phones. On the subway, everyone looked at the mobile phone which formed a beautiful landscape.

I don’t know how to walk my way in the future, but I know that photography will always accompany me. She brings me strength and let me learn to be grateful.

An unforgettable traveling

I really like traveling. I feel that traveling can broaden my horizons and relax myself. I like to travel with different kinds of people, whether it is my family or friends. One of the most impressive experience was a trip to Taiwan with my college friends last Christmas holiday.

As I was stunned by various Taiwanese idol TV series and beautiful legends, my friends and I decided to travel to Taiwan together a year ago. This time, I traveled together with my best five girl friends who I met in the university Drama Club, all this made the trip full of fun and moving.

It took us ten days to visit three cities, Taichung, Hualien and Taipei, which is the longest trip I have ever taken and it is also my happiest time.

Our first destination is Taichung, the central of Taiwan. That was a sunny day with the blue sky and white clouds. We visited Donghai University, which is famous for its beautiful scenery. We sat on the grass in front of the church, bathing the bright sunshine and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere in the campus.

After that, we went to have dinner. The Fengjia Night Market in Taichung is one of the best night markets in Taiwan. We collected a lot of traveling tips about food before we set off and prepared to have a big meal at the night market. My friend Pigeon presented a suggestion to play a game together, all of us went to buy a kind of snack that we thought were the most delicious one, and then brought back to let everyone hit a score together, at last, pick the best food, and the winners can get rewards. I still remembered that night filled with laughter, and I tasted Taiwan’s most distinctive local cuisine such as large intestines package small intestines, round rice, braised pork rice and so on. Each food has its own unique taste which made us fascinated.

The second stop of the trip is Hualien in the eastern Taiwan. Hualian is famous for its blue sea and misty peaks. It is really a pure land. We piled stones in Qixingtan. It is said that one can have good luck with seven piled up stones. We sat on the clear water cliff with our feet hanging in the air, as well as bathing in the gentle sunshine. At last, we drove through the cave where the rocks was irritating to the pebbles that may fall at any time. In the evening, we also went to a famous Starbucks coffee shop which was built with 29 containers. It is said that this is an internationally renowned architect who personally manipulates the sunshade glass windows in a staggered stack, that can reflect the blue sky and white clouds. You can see the sun is shining, and the remote mountains are waving at you, that is exactly the quite Hualien!

When we were in Hualien, it happened to catch up with the Christmas eve. Thus we organized a gift exchange activity. Everyone picked up a gift before they traveled. On that day, we played the game to draw the object of the gift, and everyone could receive a gift by other. The moment of receiving gifts is very exciting. I received a film camera and I found it very suitable for me because I really like to use camera to record my colorful life. After changing the gift, we chatted and talked to each other till very late.

After appreciating the natural scenery, we took the small train to Taipei in the north part of Taiwan. We went to fly the sky lanterns. There is a large lantern festivals every year. Countless lanterns flew to the sky together spotted the dark night sky. We also wrote the wishes and expectations for the future on the sky lights, and then looked the lights drift further and further with the wind. In the evening, we visited the Jiufen ancient town, which is the location for many movies. We tasted the sweet bean blossoms and wheel cakes that left us a good memory in the journey.

The last destination was Taipei. My friends and I visited the National Palace Museum to appreciate many precious cultural relics. I was amazed at the changes in history and the glory of the ancient empire.

On the last day of 2018, we came to Taiwan’s tallest building called 101 to watch the fireworks and welcome the New Year. People was crowded, everyone wanted to draw a perfect ending for the upcoming 2018. Although the weather was a little raining, the enthusiasm of us remained undiminished. We shouted countdowns together, “5, 4, 3, 2, 1! happy New Year!”. The 101 building spouted beautiful fireworks at the moment that was rather colorful and dazzling. Everyone embraced each other and celebrated the New Year. That was the most ceremonial event I have ever had.

Although the trip in Taiwan was ended, our friendship has warmed up and everyone knew each other better. We also used the camera to record lots of pleasant moments on the road. We also cut it into a vlog and put it on the Internet. This travel was really unforgettable!

My old urchin grandfather

My grandfather is a spirited old man. Even though he is 76 years old, he still maintains his passion for life, and he has a great influence on me.

When I was in elementary school, my grandfather liked to tell me some stories, whether it was the knowledge in the book or the experience of my grandfather. From the age of three, I went to my grandfather’s house to sleep. My grandfather would always tell me a few stories about Tang Poetry and Thumbelina before I go to sleep. Listening to the Tang poetry every day, I felt deafness gradually, so that I could remember every word of the poetry. Every time I went to school in Chinese class, I could always recite it back and get the applause from teachers and classmates. The 300 poems of the Tang poems have been smashed, leaving behind the traces of the years.

My grandfather would often tell me the story of his childhood. At that time, they were catching up with the poverty period. There were six or seven children at home. Although they sometimes could not eat fully, my grandfather’s childhood was still very happy. In the summer, they went to the fields to steal the corn and peanuts planted by the farmers and they also walked barefoot in the shallow mud to play together. In the winter, brothers were frozen in a quilt to chat with each other, and would also buy a few cents of roasted sweet potatoes on the way to school. My grandfather said that once upon a time her sister was ill, their mother was very distressed and gave money to let grandfather go to the street to buy a steamed bread. Looking at the steamed roll of the white flower in the hand, grandpapa’s saliva flowed out. He tried to tear off a whole piece of skin outside the steamed bread and eat it. Thus, the rest is still a whole one. Grandfather is really a small ghost!

My grandfather is a person who is very persistent with music. Grandfather was fairly obsessed with music from an early age, but at that time, for the sake of poverty, he could not afford to buy musical instruments, and the music dream was stranded. But when he grown up, my grandfather rekindled the passion for music that also affected me. Grandfather likes to play the violin, play the cucurbit and the keyboard piano, these instruments can be found in his home. Every day, when I went home from school, I could always appreciate the beautiful melodies played by my grandfather.

In order to let the next generation inherit his love for music, my grandfather also taught me to play the violin when I was six years old. Every week he sent me to the violin class with the wind and rain, which also made our relationship more and more intimate. My grandfather would give me some simple instructions when I practice, such as the higher pitch, or the rhythm is not right, these small details can be all heard by him. Growing up in such a music family, I got the certificate of violin level 10 in the sixth grade of elementary school, which made the whole family feel proud.

Nowadays, after I went to college, my grandfather still practices piano and blows cucurbits at home every day, which really live and learn!

My hobbies are basically cultivated by my grandfather. Whether it is sports talent or art cells. On every Sunday of the elementary school, my grandfather would take me to the public park near my home to skate, which not only exercised my physical fitness, but also cultivated my sports cells. I won the first prize on hundred meters running competition at the primary school sports meeting. I also enjoyed to watch my grandfather practicing calligraphy. Although I don’t write well, every time I see my grandfather sitting at the desk and writing a calligraphy, I would be deeply attracted by the profoundness of Chinese culture, as if time is still. Grandpa also likes photography. Many of my childhood photos were taken from the lens of my grandfather. From the tour of the West Lake, to the lovely movements of dancing in the Literary performance, also the moment of the 100-meter sprint of the sports meeting, the camera preserved me a lot of good memories. Electronic photo albums have also been created for each period of my life by my grandfather for better preservation.

My grandfather is really positive about life. Thanks for having such a humorous old urchin grandfather. The time spent with them is pretty precious, and I will cherish the time with my family.

My best friend Doreen

It is said that university is a small society that you can meet different kinds of people. In fact, I have met lots of friends from class and league. Their appearance added endless fun to my college life. While talking to my best friend, I would mention Doreen who I met in the drama club.

I knew Doreen because of the drama club. On the school club recruiting day, I filled out the drama club I always wanted to try, since I had an actress dream when I was a child. Doreen is one grade higher than me, and at that time she was a member of the drama club. When I was notified to attend the interview, Doreen came to interview me. We talked very speculatively. I completed my performance test. In the end, I successfully entered the drama club and became an actress. At that time, Doreen impressed me a lot who was very warm and cordial.

The time Doreen concentrating on directing the drama was the most fascinating moment I have ever met. Doreen is one of the talent directors in the drama club. She has exactly huge brain hole and clear logic, as well as the strong imagination that always helps her to write a good script for us. Doreen was quietly serious when she was in the direct. she was not sloppy at all and would not have a joke with us. As long as the actor made an inaccurate action or eye’s angle, she will point it out directly and strive for perfection in each detail.

Once in a rehearsal, I can’t catch the character’s real expression when I said the lines. Doreen demonstrated for herself to told me how to grasp emotions in her own plain language. I practiced it for dozens of times under her guidance and finally managed it. Rehearsing the drama is such a hard mission. After directing us to rehearse, Doreen and the other directors had to meet up together to sum up the shortcomings of the daily rehearse, and proposed the improvement method until late at night.

In an accidental opportunity, I was deeply moved by her voice. It turns out Doreen is a versatile girl. In the second semester, I participated in the school’s English drama competition with the students of the drama club. Doreen is our director who responsible for the written script and the design of the stage action. This made us meet every day and got familiar with each other better. Once before rehearsal, Doreen brought an Ukulele, a kind of instrument smaller than guitar. Everyone started to let her perform. She is a little shy. That night, she played “a gentle day” by Mayday, which is the most moving version I have ever heard. Doreen has a slightly jazzy voice, mixed with the chords of ukulele are so beautiful and touching. I also let Doreen to teach me how to play, we have had an unforgettable night. She let me to pay attention to her talented musical side.

We went to travel together and gained stable friendship forever. Last year, we traveled to Taiwan on Christmas Holiday. During that trip, we increased our understanding and affection for each other. The trip lasted for ten days. We went to Taipei to see the most beautiful 101 fireworks and welcome the New Year’s coming. We went to Hualien to see the bluest sea. Also we went to Jiufen to fly the biggest sky lantern for the coming year. We also went to the concert together and walked a long the Taichung streets to visit the most popular night market. The whole trip was full of laughter, we can often think together, Doreen is the best friend I have ever met.

Doreen is about to graduate soon, we will go to different cities to study and live. Despite of it, we still keep in touch continuously, being a partner to listen to each other carefully. Doreen is my best friend forever.

My father is my hero

I grew up in a warm and harmonious family. As the only child, I am always taken care of by the whole family. Although my father went to work to another city when I was in junior high school, our relationship has become closer and closer over the years.

My father plays a significant role in my life. He is not only my mentor, but also my strongest backing.

In my heart, I always regard my father as a superhero with a mighty and powerful image. In my childhood memory, my papa can do anything, fixing the refrigerator, driving car, skiing, and so on. I admired him very much. I hope I can be as outstanding as him one day. I still remember the time he taught me how to ride a bike.

When I was seven years old, I was greatly envious when I saw my cousins were riding bicycles. I insisted on pleading with my father to teach me how to ride. At the beginning, I was quietly confident because I think it very simple and eager to learn. While when I try startly, I find it difficult to control, and I fell down several times. From that time, I became afraid of it and impatient. Father patted the ash on my pants and told me some skills patiently and encouraged me to try again. He hold the bike’s tail, while I hold the handle, putting the feet on the pedal. At the same time, my papa pushed hard in the back. Until I kept the balance, father quietly let me go of his hand. Finally, I succeeded on riding bikes under my father’s guidance.

In the process of learning bicycle, my father not only taught me the practical operation, but also told me the truth of meeting problems. Whatever you do, just be patient and relax. When you settle down, you will make progress. After that, I showed a great interest in everything, includes playing the violin, playing taekwondo, swimming. With my father’s encouragement, I learned a lot of skills.

When I was in junior high school, my father went to another city to work. It was   my mother who accompanied me to spend the most difficult years. While the relationship between my father and I did not diminish at all. I often broke down on study and cried silently at home. When my papa heard that, he did not scold me for my poor performance, instead of encouraging me patiently, and telling me to solve each problems step by step, master the problem-solving skills, and learn to conclude. Every month, my papa would spare some time to go home, accompanying me to go outdoors in order to relieve my pressure. He is my strongest spiritual support all the time.

When I went to college, my father often talked with me. He is my closest friend. As the long distance between my hometown and Macau, father always worried about me that I can not take care of myself. Thus he usually sent me some snacks. On the other hand, my father also gave me some guidance and help for my future career development. He encouraged me to take part in some practical activities to enrich my life. Under his support, I joined school’s drama club and became one of them. I also went to a TV station for an internship and became a news reporter on this winter vacation. Every summer vacation, father would also take me to travel which can broaden my horizon and relaxed myself.

My father is my hero, he plays an indispensable role in my life. I love my father very much.
